Miss Niya has been known for her sense of style since an early age, remembering her childhood days of frilly dresses, matching bloomers and chic 20’s-inspired getups in the late 90’s, she’s never been afraid to make her statement. With a natural ability to make something out of nothing, a background in Fashion Design from George Brown, combined with a strong West Indian work ethic made the fashion and accessories business the obvious career choice for this petite powerhouse.

Miss Niya, whose focus is one-of-a-kind high-end fashion accessories, emerged in 2004 when the designer needed a few extra dollars. A couple of samples and a little market research later Miss Niya had found a demand for her literal “one-of-a-kind” works of art and was vending everywhere from tradeshows to nightclubs. Musicians Ayah, Ivana Santilli, Saidah Baba Talibah, J-Davey, Sisi Wang of Canada’s Next Top Model and actor Kirsten Booth have all worn her work. Miss Niya also contracts her more conceptual work to photographers, art directors and stylists such as Ayesha FlyChick, Kareem Ajani, Urbanology magazine and Zigga Zagga Productions. She rarely duplicates an item and even when creating for retailers or wedding parties, there are no more than 3, to maintain exclusivity.

FUZE SPRING TREND REPORT ACCESSORIES RUNWAY SHOW MARCH 2010

Philosophy, street-fashion and a colourful palate otherwise known as the people of Toronto are what inspire Miss Niya’s handmade designs. Like herself, they are raw and unpredictable yet timeless with just a hint of mystery. Each piece starts as a blank canvass in her mind, as she lets her materials and mood tell her what to do, working wherever she can find a space. Mediums such as glass, wood, pearls, Swarovski crystals, sterling silver, leather, and semiprecious stones, work their way into an array of colour conscious art for the body. Each fresh, yet classic design comes with a note explaining the statement behind the piece, creating an experience as unique as the piece itself.
